Hello everyone and welcome back! We here at JFR are excited to introduce our new editor for the Spring 2024 semester, starting with Kate Goranson. Kate is a Sophomore majoring in English with a Literature/Language Concentration. She works at the Writing Center during the week and a banquet hall on the weekends. She has been playing violin since 5th grade and has also picked up guitar and singing. During her free time she likes to go to the movies with her friends, nap with her cat, and thrift shop. Some of her favorite authors include Sally Rooney and Madeline Miller.

Who are you and what is your role in the Jet Fuel Review?

My name is Kate Goranson and I am an Assistant Prose Editor for Jet Fuel Review, as well as the Assistant Blog Editor and blogger.

What book might we find on your nightstand right now?

I am currently reading All Quiet on the Western Front. My sister got me the book for Christmas after I mentioned I had watched the movie and really liked it. I do always enjoy reading anti-war war novels, so finding a book like that on my nightstand is very likely.

Describe your perfect reading atmosphere.

My perfect reading atmosphere would probably be in my bed when the house is quiet and my cat, Brownie, lying next to me.

If you could “re-make” a poorly written movie that was based on a book, what movie would it be?

I remember going to see an adaptation of A Wrinkle in Time in 8th grade and enjoying the movie. But when I read the book, I realized it is a loose adaptation. I think I would like to more closely adapt it.

Give us a quote from your favorite (or any) book/movie.

I haven’t read Little Women, but I have seen the Greta Gerwig directed film many times. I think there are so many great quotes in it. I love when Amy says “I am not a poet, I’m just a woman,” when talking to Laurie about giving up art. I also love when Meg says to Jo before getting married, “Just because my dreams are different than yours doesn’t mean they’re unimportant.”

If you were invited to have coffee with any fictional character, who would you most like to meet? Why?

If I were to have coffee with any fictional character it would be with Fox Mulder from The X-Files because I would love to hear all his paranormal stories.

Share your top five favorite pieces of writing (anything included, be it movies, books, etc.).

My top five pieces of writing include Normal People by Sally Rooney, The Things They Carried by Tim O’Brien, Manchester by the Sea by Kenneth Lonergan, Mean Girls by Tina Fey because it is an integral part of pop culture, and My Own Private Idaho but specifically the scene that River Phoenix wrote when his character says, “I love you, and you don’t pay me.”
